A climbing and bouldering base camp near Sam's Throne

Ozark sandstone is some of the best rock in the middle of the country. At Bearly Earth there are boulders and bluff lines on the property, and two of the state's best climbing areas are a short drive away.

Sandstone in the backyard

The 70 acres at Bearly Earth are full of sandstone boulders and bluff lines. Some are right in the front yard, and many more are scattered through the woods along the private trails. There are no guidebook problems here, just rock to explore. Bring crash pads and a brush, find a line that looks good and work it out. It's great for warm-up sessions, rest-day scrambling and getting kids comfortable on real rock.

Climbing and bouldering on the property is at your own risk. Spot each other, pad the landings, stay off wet or mossy holds after rain and keep well back from bluff edges.

Sam's Throne: 35 min from the cabin

Sam's Throne, on Judea Mountain near Mount Judea in the Ozark National Forest, is one of the best-known climbing areas in Arkansas. It's famous for traditional climbing on tall sandstone walls with big views over the Big Creek valley. The Forest Service lists year-round access and no site fee. There are vault toilets but no potable water or trash service, so bring water and pack everything out.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch: 50 min from the cabin

Near Jasper, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is a privately run climbing destination with more than 900 sandstone routes. Most are bolted sport climbs, with trad lines and bouldering too. The ranch currently lists a $14 adult day pass (kids 11 and under free with an adult). Every climber checks in at the Trading Co., gets a wristband and signs a waiver, and guides and rental gear are available.

Why climbers like staying here

  • One central base for both Sam's Throne and Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, plus the Buffalo River for rest days.
  • Room for a whole crew: 4 bedrooms, 7 beds and 3 full baths for up to 10 climbers.
  • A full kitchen for big dinners and a fire pit for a post-send beer.
  • Quiet, dark nights on 70 acres, so you sleep well before an early start.

On the property

Cracks, slabs, roofs and mossy boulders, all on our land

These are the bluffs and boulders on the Bearly Earth property itself. Bring a brush; some lines haven't seen chalk in years, and some never have.
