No trailhead parking lot required
The best hike near Jasper might be the one that starts on your porch. Bearly Earth's 15+ miles of private trails wind off the ridge into hardwood hollows, along creek beds and under sandstone bluff lines. You won't find crowds, trail fees or a full parking lot, just your group and the woods.
Three private waterfalls
The property has three wet-weather waterfalls: a wide pour-over off the bluff, a tall ribbon deep in the hollow and a narrow slot fall that roars after spring storms. Like most Ozark falls, they depend on rain. They flow best from late fall through spring and for a few days after a good summer storm, and they can slow to a trickle in a dry August. Ask your hosts which ones are running when you arrive.
Bluffs, boulders and a cave to explore
Between the falls, the land is full of things to find. Moss-covered sandstone boulders sit scattered through the woods, and the bluff lines have overhangs and ledges to look under. A shallow rock-shelter cave about 15 feet deep is a guaranteed hit with kids. It's ideal ground for wandering with a camera, a field guide or a pack of kids hunting for the next big rock.
Tips for hiking the property
- Wear real footwear. Sandstone is grippy when dry and slick when wet, especially near the falls.
- From spring through fall, use tick and chigger repellent and do a tick check afterward.
- Carry water and a phone with an offline map. Cell signal can drop in the hollows.
- Stay back from bluff edges, and keep a close eye on kids near drop-offs.
