What is Sam's Throne?
Sam's Throne is a towering sandstone formation on Judea Mountain near Mount Judea, in the Ozark National Forest of Newton County. Its cliffs ring the mountaintop above the Big Creek valley. Climbers come for the traditional crack and face lines, hikers and photographers come for the views, and campers come for the dispersed sites on top.
How far is Sam's Throne from Bearly Earth?
Sam's Throne is about 35 min (19 mi) from the cabin, so you can be roping up mid-morning after a slow breakfast on the porch. Very few Jasper-area cabin rentals are this convenient to both Sam's Throne and Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.
Climbing at Sam's Throne
Sam's Throne is best known for traditional climbing on solid Ozark sandstone, with walls such as Chicken Head Wall circling the throne. Bring a full trad rack and a current guidebook or app. For bolted sport routes, pair it with Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, which has more than 900 routes and is about 50 minutes from the cabin. Climbing is at your own risk, so check fixed gear and conditions before you commit.
Hiking and views
Even if you never tie in, Sam's Throne is worth the drive. Short trails wind below the sandstone walls, past overhangs, wildflowers and shortleaf pines, and the rim views over the valley are spectacular at sunrise and in fall color. Keep kids and dogs close: the cliff edges are unfenced.
Stay for sunset if you can. The summit rocks look out over layer after layer of Ozark ridges, and the evening light turns the sandstone gold. After a winter storm, the snow-covered pines and frozen rim make it feel like a different mountain. Ozark back roads can ice over in winter, so check conditions before you leave the cabin.
Know before you go
- Access: The Forest Service lists year-round access and no site fee.
- Facilities: Vault toilets, but no potable water or trash service, so bring water and pack out everything.
- Seasons: Spring and fall are prime climbing seasons. Summer afternoons get hot and humid, so start early.
- Stay safe: Sandstone loses strength when wet. Stay off wet rock until it has fully dried, and follow posted guidance.
A perfect Sam's Throne day from Bearly Earth
Leave the cabin after breakfast and climb or hike the throne through the morning. Then drive south to Pedestal Rocks for an easy afternoon loop past rock pedestals and a bluff-edge waterfall. You'll be back on the porch with time to spare before sunset over the valley.
